Gaurav Gogoi Alleges Assam CM, Family Grabbed Nearly 12,000 Bighas of Land

Guwahati: Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday levelled serious allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family, claiming they had illegally occupied nearly 12,000 bighas of land—around 3,960 acres—across different parts of the state. The ruling BJP did not issue an immediate response to the charges. Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan, Gogoi said the allegations were based on findings of an internal party investigation, which he described as having led to “startling revelations.”

“Almost 12,000 bighas of land have been occupied by the Chief Minister and his family across Assam,” Gogoi alleged, adding that the figure was tentative and could increase as the inquiry progresses. He announced that the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has launched a statewide campaign to trace the sources of the Chief Minister’s assets. As part of the drive, the party unveiled a website titled ‘Who Is HBS’ to collect information related to Sarma’s assets and financial dealings. Members of the public have been encouraged to submit inputs through the website, a QR code or a dedicated helpline number—9133400200.

Gogoi also accused the Chief Minister of reviving allegations about his alleged links with Pakistan to divert attention from the land grab issue. Sarma had earlier said he would release evidence of such links by September 10, 2025. “Why did he not release the evidence then? He has suddenly remembered it now because we are preparing a dossier on alleged corruption and land grabbing by him and his family,” Gogoi said, calling the accusations against him a “flop show.”

Meanwhile, APCC media department chairman Bedabrata Bora claimed that the newly launched website was briefly hacked during the press conference. He alleged the involvement of the BJP’s IT cell, a charge the BJP has yet to respond to.
