Ambubachi Mela 2026 Preparations Begin at Kamakhya Temple, New Access Route Planned for Pilgrims

Guwahati, May 20: Preparations have begun for the annual Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya Temple, with authorities initiating arrangements for one of the largest spiritual gatherings in northeastern India as the event draws closer.

According to members of the temple’s Doloi community, the four-day religious congregation will commence on the night of June 22, corresponding with the seventh day of the Assamese month of Ahaar, and conclude at sunrise on June 26.

Temple authorities have already started preliminary planning and are holding consultations with the district administration regarding security measures, crowd control and logistical management. Lakhs of devotees, pilgrims and ascetics from across the country are expected to arrive for the annual event.

As part of efforts to improve crowd movement and reduce congestion, authorities have decided to introduce an additional access route for devotees this year. Besides the existing Nursery route, pilgrims will also be able to reach the shrine through a newly developed road from the Pandu side, a move expected to improve accessibility during peak footfall periods.

Preparations on the ground are already becoming visible, with several sadhus beginning to arrive at Kamakhya Dham ahead of the festival. Temple authorities expect the number of ascetics and visitors to rise significantly over the coming weeks as the event approaches.

To enhance security and monitoring during the mela, advanced CCTV surveillance systems are also planned across the temple premises.

Widely referred to as the “Mahakumbh of the East,” the Ambubachi Mela remains one of Assam’s most significant religious occasions, drawing massive gatherings every year to the Nilachal Hills shrine dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya.
