Army Restores Connectivity Between Siliguri and Mirik with Temporary Bridge

Siliguri, June 24: The Indian Army’s Trishakti Corps has restored a crucial transport link in North Bengal by constructing a temporary foot bridge across the Balason River at Dudhia, reconnecting Siliguri and Mirik after severe weather disrupted movement in the region.

The intervention followed a request from the district administration after the existing bridge was washed away by continuous rainfall, leaving residents and travellers facing significant difficulties in crossing the river.

Acting swiftly, the Army established a 34-metre-long foot bridge to restore pedestrian connectivity and maintain access to important routes, including border crossing points such as Pashupati Phatak.

The temporary structure is expected to facilitate safe movement for local residents and commuters while providing immediate relief until a permanent solution is put in place.

The Army is also preparing to install a wider Bailey Bridge at the site following the administrative requisition. Once completed, the bridge will support vehicular movement and help revive tourism activities in the region, which serve as an important source of livelihood for many local residents.

Authorities said adequate safety and structural measures have been incorporated to ensure the stability and secure use of the bridge.

An Army official stated that the Indian Army remains committed to assisting civil authorities and local communities during emergencies, adding that the restored connectivity would ease daily travel, support tourism and provide relief until permanent infrastructure is established.

The initiative reflects the coordinated efforts of the Army, civil administration and local communities in addressing infrastructure challenges caused by adverse weather conditions.
