Assam Expands Power Infrastructure as State Moves Towards Energy Surplus, Says Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 19 said the state is steadily moving towards becoming an energy-surplus state through sustained investments and rapid expansion of power infrastructure.

Sharing the update on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said the government is working to strengthen the electricity sector to ensure reliable and uninterrupted power supply to households across the state.

According to Sarma, Assam currently has 82 operational substations, a grid capacity of 10,000 MVA and a transmission network spanning 5,300 circuit kilometres, which together form the backbone of the state’s power infrastructure.

To meet rising energy requirements and support future growth, the state has initiated several expansion projects. These include the construction of 16 new substations, the addition of 6,340 MVA of grid capacity and the commissioning of 957 circuit kilometres of new transmission lines.

The Chief Minister stated that the ongoing efforts are aimed at enhancing transmission capacity, strengthening the power network and ensuring dependable electricity supply across Assam.

He added that the expansion of infrastructure reflects the government’s commitment to transforming Assam into an energy-surplus state capable of meeting increasing demand while supporting economic development and improving the quality of life for residents.
