Guwahati, June 1: The Assam government has directed the immediate removal of all advertisement structures installed on roadside dividers, medians, flyovers and Road Over Bridges (ROBs) across the state, citing concerns over public safety and the increasing risk of road accidents.
In a notification issued by the Public Works Roads Department (PWRD), the government stated that roadside dividers and medians are intended exclusively for tree and flower plantations. However, authorities have observed that many such spaces are being used for advertising purposes through the installation of hoardings, advertisement boards, flex banners, signboards, unipoles and similar structures.
According to the notification, these installations pose serious traffic hazards by distracting motorists and obstructing visibility on roads. The department noted that such distractions can increase the likelihood of accidents and compromise the safety of road users.
In view of these concerns, all concerned officers and staff have been instructed to take immediate steps to remove and uninstall advertisement structures from roadside dividers, medians, flyovers and ROBs. The directive has been issued in the interest of public safety and to reduce accident risks on roads across the state.
The order will apply to all categories of roads that fall under the jurisdiction of the Assam Public Works Roads Department.
The notification was issued by the Commissioner and Special Secretary to the Government of Assam, Public Works Roads Department, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving road safety and ensuring that public infrastructure is used only for its designated purpose.
