Assam Governor Urges Youth to Preserve State’s Vaishnavite Heritage

Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya has stressed the need to preserve the state’s rich Vaishnavite heritage and strengthen the younger generation’s connection with its cultural and spiritual traditions. The Governor made the remarks during his visit to the historic Shri Shri Shiyala Vaishnav Deomornoi Satra in Darrang district on Friday, where he attended celebrations marking Sri Krishna Janmashtami.

Addressing devotees, Acharya highlighted the enduring influence of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva and his teachings centred on righteousness, devotion, love, social welfare and human upliftment. He said Sankardeva’s vision of social harmony and human unity continues to hold relevance in contemporary society. Describing Satras and Naamghars as important centres of Assam’s cultural and spiritual consciousness, the Governor said these institutions serve as custodians of the state’s art, traditions and heritage while promoting social harmony. Acharya called for greater participation of young people in preserving and promoting Assam’s cultural legacy. He said the younger generation should embrace modern technology and contemporary development while remaining firmly rooted in their cultural values and traditions.

Referring to the need to balance development with heritage conservation, the Governor cited the vision of “Vikas Bhi Aur Virasat Bhi” and mentioned initiatives such as the Batadrava Than Cultural Project, Maa Kamakhya Temple Access Corridor and efforts to preserve the legacy of Lachit Borphukan. He also emphasised linking the spiritual values of Satras and Naamghars with social service and community welfare. The Governor extended Janmashtami greetings and expressed hope that Assam’s spiritual and cultural traditions would continue to strengthen peace, harmony and social cohesion. He congratulated the Sattradhikar, devotees and local community for their efforts to preserve the heritage of the historic Satra.
