Guwahati, August 20: Assam Police stopped 17 people allegedly attempting to enter the state from Bangladesh in the early hours of Thursday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Sarma said the group was detected during an alert operation and prevented from entering India. He reiterated that people attempting to enter the country without valid documents would be sent back.
“No Kaagaz No Entry!” Sarma said in a social media post, adding that Assam would remain open to those entering legally but illegal entrants would be sent back.
The Chief Minister did not disclose where the group was intercepted or where they were subsequently sent.
Assam Police have maintained heightened vigilance along the India-Bangladesh border as part of efforts to prevent undocumented entry into the state. The Assam government has repeatedly stated that it is working towards curbing illegal infiltration.
The BSF has also intensified surveillance along the 1,885-km India-Bangladesh border in the Northeast.
