Assam Recorded Sharp Decline in Crime Rate in 2024: Jayanta Mallabaruah

Guwahati, May 8: Jayanta Mallabaruah on May 8 said Assam has recorded one of the sharpest declines in crime rates in the country, citing findings from the latest Crime in India 2024 released by the National Crime Records Bureau.

In a post on X, the minister said Assam registered 49,552 crime cases in 2024, compared to 64,959 cases in 2023 and 68,937 cases in 2022, reflecting a 28 per cent decline over the last two years.

According to the NCRB data cited by him, the state’s crime rate currently stands at 137 cases per lakh population, considerably lower than the national average of 418.

The report also indicated improvement in Assam’s charge-sheeting rate, which increased to 67.1 per cent in 2024 from below 50 per cent in earlier years, suggesting faster investigations and stronger legal follow-up.

Mallabaruah said the figures reflected the impact of sustained governance, stronger policing and collective efforts aimed at ensuring peace, stability and development in the state.

He added that after decades of insurgency and law-and-order challenges, Assam is gradually entering a new phase focused on peace, economic growth and investment.
