Assam: Two Sent to Jail in Goalpara Attempted Murder Case Linked to Alleged Extramarital Affair

Goalpara, June 1: A sensational attempted murder case allegedly stemming from an extramarital relationship has surfaced in Assam’s Goalpara district, resulting in the arrest and judicial custody of two accused individuals.

The incident was reported from West Simulbari village under the jurisdiction of Lakhipur Police Station and has generated widespread attention in the locality.

According to police, the case centres on an alleged long-term illicit relationship between a woman and Mofidul Islam, who is reportedly a relative of her husband, Shafiqul Islam. Investigators believe the two allegedly conspired to remove Shafiqul, whom they viewed as an obstacle to their relationship.

Police said Shafiqul had returned from Guwahati on May 26 to celebrate Eid with his family. During the early hours of the night, at around 2 am, his wife allegedly persuaded him to step outside the house on the pretext of going to the toilet. Investigators allege that, as part of a pre-planned conspiracy, Mofidul Islam attacked Shafiqul with a sharp weapon, inflicting critical injuries before fleeing the scene.

Following a complaint lodged by family members at Lakhipur Police Station, police registered a case and launched an investigation. Based on the evidence gathered during the probe, police initially arrested Shafiqul’s wife and produced her before a court, which remanded her to judicial custody.

The main accused, Mofidul Islam, who had allegedly gone into hiding after the incident, was later traced and arrested by police. He was subsequently produced before a court and sent to jail.

Police officer Jiban Daimari said the weapon allegedly used in the attack was recovered during an operation conducted with the accused.

Meanwhile, Shafiqul Islam continues to undergo treatment and is said to be in critical condition. Police have intensified their investigation into the case, which has sparked strong reactions among residents of the area.
