Guwahati, May 6: Atul Bora, president of the Asom Gana Parishad and MLA-elect from Bokakhat, on May 6 reiterated the party’s commitment to the implementation of the Assam Accord, stating that several critical responsibilities rest with the Centre.
Speaking after the declaration of Assembly election results, Bora said the state government has already taken steps towards implementing the Accord. However, he pointed out that key components—such as border sealing, protection of indigenous populations, and execution of Clause 6 recommendations—fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
He emphasised that the party remains committed to ensuring that the provisions of the Accord are implemented in both letter and spirit, particularly those aimed at safeguarding the rights and identity of indigenous communities in Assam.
Highlighting governance outcomes, Bora said that action against illegal encroachment has contributed to improved law and order in the state. He added that public satisfaction over eviction drives has helped restore stability and create a conducive environment for industrial growth.
Bora also underscored initiatives targeting women and youth development, noting that sustained policy support has strengthened socio-economic conditions. He credited Narendra Modi for prioritising the Northeast, stating that various initiatives have accelerated the region’s development trajectory.
The AGP, a key ally in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, has maintained its political relevance in Assam with its performance in the recent elections and is expected to continue playing a role in the coalition government.
