Guwahati, March 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party has appointed senior leader and sitting MLA Amiya Kumar Bhuyan as the State Vice President of its Assam unit with immediate effect, even as internal tensions emerge over candidate selection ahead of the Assembly elections.
The announcement was made by Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, who conveyed his best wishes to Bhuyan for a “bright political future.” The development comes at a crucial juncture, with the party dealing with dissent and strategic adjustments in key constituencies.
The situation has gained prominence following the BJP’s decision to field Bhupen Kumar Borah from the Bihpuria constituency. Borah, a former president of the Indian National Congress in Assam who recently joined the BJP, has been nominated as the party’s candidate, reflecting a recalibrated electoral strategy.
The move, however, has led to dissatisfaction within party ranks. Bhuyan, who was denied renomination from Bihpuria, had earlier announced his resignation from the BJP and declared his intention to contest the election as an Independent candidate. He stated that he would file his nomination and remain in the electoral fray, urging his supporters to continue backing him.
The parallel decisions—assigning Bhuyan a key organisational role while replacing him as the candidate—highlight the party’s internal balancing efforts. At the same time, the induction and candidature of Borah underline shifting political dynamics in the state as parties reposition themselves ahead of the polls.
