Dhole Returns to Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong Landscape, Says Himanta Biswa Sarma

Dhole, May 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 23 highlighted the return of the Dhole to the Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong landscape, describing it as a significant ecological milestone and an indicator of successful conservation efforts in the state.

The Chief Minister, in a social media post, said the Dhole — regarded as a silent and highly efficient predator — had once moved freely through forests in the region before gradually disappearing from the landscape.

He stated that sustained efforts to protect and expand forest cover, strengthen habitat connectivity and remove encroachments from forest areas had helped create favourable conditions for wildlife recovery.

According to Sarma, the species’ return was documented through conservation monitoring over recent years, beginning with a lone camera-trap image in 2022, followed by direct sightings and later confirmation of an entire pack in 2026.

The Chief Minister noted that the return of an apex predator such as the Dhole reflects improvements in ecosystem health, forest connectivity and biodiversity conservation.

The development is being viewed as an important sign of ecological recovery in the Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong wildlife landscape, which serves as a crucial corridor supporting movement and habitat connectivity for multiple species in Assam.
