In a significant operation against narcotics trafficking, Dibrugarh Police conducted a large-scale raid at Harijan Colony near the Dibrugarh Town Railway Station, arresting nine individuals and recovering suspected heroin, cash and gold ornaments.
Addressing the media, senior police officer Nayan Moni Baruah said the operation was part of an ongoing drive against drug trafficking being carried out under the supervision of the district police chief. He said police teams had conducted a series of raids across the district over the past week, during which investigators gathered information suggesting that the source of the contraband was the Railway Colony area, popularly known as “Koyla Patti”.
Acting on the intelligence inputs, police launched a surprise operation in the locality on Saturday. During the raid, officers searched several houses and apprehended nine persons suspected of being involved in the illegal drug trade.
According to police, approximately 79 grams of suspected heroin were recovered during the operation. Officers also seized Rs 4.92 lakh in cash and a quantity of gold ornaments from the residence of a woman identified as Sujata Biswas.
Investigators are now working to trace the source of the narcotics and unravel the network operating in the area. Police are also verifying whether any of the accused are employed by the Indian Railways.
Baruah said that if any of those arrested are found to be railway employees, the district police will formally approach the railway authorities and seek strict departmental action against them.
The operation forms part of Assam Police’s intensified campaign to dismantle drug trafficking networks and curb the spread of narcotics across Upper Assam.
