Four Labourers Killed, Six Injured After Stone-Chips Truck Overturns in Tripura’s Dhalai District

Dhalai, May 18: Four labourers lost their lives and six others sustained injuries in a tragic road accident near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Longtarai Valley subdivision of Dhalai district late on Sunday evening after a truck carrying stone chips overturned.

According to police, the truck was travelling from Chawmanu towards the Biju Border Out Post while transporting stone chips for ongoing infrastructure work in the border region. The accident occurred on a steep stretch of road that was reportedly in poor condition.

Sub-divisional Police Officer Sonacharan Jamatia said the vehicle was attempting to negotiate the uphill road when it lost control while reversing and overturned. He stated that four labourers who were seated on top of the load of stone chips were thrown onto the road, after which the heavy consignment collapsed and buried them underneath.

“The four labourers who were seated on top of the vehicle died on the spot after being buried under the stone chips, while those inside the cabin managed to survive,” Jamatia said.

Personnel from nearby Border Security Force posts rushed to the spot immediately after the incident and launched a rescue operation. The injured were rescued and shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The deceased have been identified as Balidhanjoy Tripura (47), Majida Tripura (50), Bathojoy Tripura (39) and Narjoy Tripura (36).

Police said six other persons were injured in the mishap, with one of them reported to be in critical condition. Most of the injured individuals were travelling inside the truck cabin when the accident took place.

A case has been registered and police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
