AGARTALA: More than 1,000 people in low-lying areas of Agartala and along the Haora River have been affected by flooding after heavy rainfall in the hill areas caused the river to rise sharply late on Saturday night.
Several areas under the Sadar and Jirania subdivisions of West Tripura were inundated, with Baldakhal, Chandrapur, Srilanka Basti, Aralia and Indranagar among the worst affected. Floodwater entered homes and residential areas along the Haora River and Katakhal Canal.
The administration intensified rescue and relief operations, deploying four boats and mobilising personnel from the Tripura State Rifles, Tripura Police and other departments. Six relief camps were opened, with affected residents being shifted to safer locations.
Chief Minister Manik Saha directed the concerned District Magistrates and Sub-Divisional Magistrates to take all necessary measures and ensure prompt relief and assistance.
West Tripura District Magistrate Vishal Kumar said heavy rainfall in the hills on Saturday led to the sharp rise in the Haora River. Although there was no significant rainfall on Sunday, rescue operations were intensified from the morning.
The Department of Water Resources said the Haora River had crossed the critical level and stood at around 10.90 metres, with officials warning that it could approach the danger level if the situation worsened.
No loss of life was reported so far. Authorities urged residents of vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain alert and cooperate with evacuation and rescue operations.
