Shillong, May 21: Construction work on the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang is progressing steadily and remains on schedule, Speaker Thomas A. Sangma said after reviewing the status of the project on May 20.
A review meeting was convened to assess the progress of construction and related infrastructure work at the upcoming Assembly complex. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also oversees the Parliamentary Affairs portfolio, along with consultants, Project Management Consultants (PMC), and officials from various departments including the Public Works Department (PWD), the IT Cell and the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
Also present during the discussions were Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma and Adviser (Legislation) Dr Andrew Simons.
Officials examined the pace of construction and reviewed preparations connected to infrastructure and allied works associated with the project. Following the meeting, the Speaker expressed satisfaction over the progress achieved so far and said there was confidence that the project would be completed within the stipulated timeline.
The meeting also addressed concerns that surfaced after a video relating to the roof structure of the Assembly building gained attention on social media in recent days. Referring to the issue, Thomas A. Sangma said the matter had been blown out of proportion and described the controversy as unfortunate.
While stating that constructive criticism and public oversight are important, he appealed to people to avoid circulating unverified content on social media. He said misleading information could create unnecessary confusion and adversely affect the image of the Legislative Assembly institution.
