Meghalaya to Establish Film City, Film Institute and Music Institute to Boost Creative Economy

Shillong, June 22: Meghalaya has unveiled plans to establish a Film City and a Film Institute in Shillong, along with a Music Institute in Tura, as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s creative economy and transform it into a centre for music, filmmaking and digital content creation.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced the initiatives during the inaugural Hello Meghalaya Music Awards held in Shillong to mark World Music Day.

Addressing the gathering, Sangma said the proposed institutions would provide sustained support to artists, filmmakers and content creators across the state. He stated that the government envisions Meghalaya and Shillong emerging as prominent destinations for music, cinema and the wider creative industry.

The Chief Minister emphasised that programmes aimed at supporting musicians, filmmakers and young entrepreneurs are equally important as other developmental initiatives, as they create opportunities and enable people to pursue their talents and ambitions.

Sangma also highlighted the expansion of the Chief Minister’s Grassroots Music Programme, which currently extends support to more than 7,000 artists across Meghalaya.

The event also showcased the growth of Hello Meghalaya, the state-backed OTT platform launched in 2024 to promote regional stories and local content. The platform has recorded more than five lakh downloads and now hosts over 1,000 titles covering films, music and digital productions.

During the programme, the government released the second edition of its grant disbursement booklet, outlining financial assistance provided to filmmakers involved in producing feature films, web series and short films.

Officials said the proposed Film City and educational institutions are expected to strengthen the infrastructure required for the creative sector and create fresh opportunities for local talent and content production in the state.
