Mizoram CEO Rejects Allegations of Foreign Nationals in Electoral Rolls

Aizawl, July 4: Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer Garima Gupta on Saturday refuted allegations that foreign nationals had been included in the state’s electoral rolls, stating that the recently completed voter verification exercise had detected no such discrepancies and that there had been no unusual rise in the electorate.

Addressing the media after the conclusion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Gupta said the exercise commenced on May 20 and concluded on June 28, during which all enumeration forms were successfully digitised.

She said the verification process led to the deletion of more than 46,000 names from the electoral rolls following detailed scrutiny.

The clarification came after the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), a prominent student organisation, raised concerns over an alleged 121 per cent increase in the number of voters in Chakma-majority areas, particularly in southern Mizoram.

Gupta rejected the allegations, maintaining that the revision had been conducted strictly in accordance with the prescribed procedures and that the electoral rolls had undergone comprehensive verification.

She added that the Election Commission had not found any irregularities in the revised electoral rolls after the completion of the verification exercise.
