Modi and Meloni Say India-Italy Ties Enter ‘Decisive Stage’ With Focus on Technology, Trade and Security

International, May 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have said that relations between India and Italy have reached a “decisive stage”, describing the partnership as one that has evolved beyond traditional diplomatic ties into a broader strategic collaboration driven by technology, trade, innovation and security.

In a joint article published in Indian and Italian media during Modi’s visit to Italy, the two leaders stated that bilateral relations are being strengthened through sustained political and institutional engagement amid a rapidly changing global landscape.

According to the article, both countries view their relationship as having moved “from a cordial friendship into a special strategic partnership grounded in the values of freedom and democracy.” The leaders noted that increasing interaction at various levels has helped shape a stronger and more comprehensive framework for cooperation.

Economic collaboration featured prominently in the joint piece, with both leaders expressing their intention to deepen trade and industrial engagement across multiple sectors, including defence, aerospace, clean energy, pharmaceuticals, textiles and tourism. They set a target of taking bilateral trade beyond €20 billion by 2029, while noting that more than 1,000 Indian and Italian companies are already operating in each other’s markets.

The article also highlighted opportunities arising from combining Italy’s design and manufacturing expertise with India’s engineering capabilities, expanding start-up ecosystem and economic growth trajectory.

Technology was identified as a central pillar of future cooperation, particularly in fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, digital infrastructure and critical minerals. Stressing the importance of ethical technological development, the leaders said advances in technology should remain aligned with democratic principles and human values.

Referring to India’s MANAV approach and Italy’s concept of human-centred “algor-ethics”, the article stated that both countries seek to ensure that artificial intelligence contributes to social development and empowerment rather than undermining human dignity.

The two leaders also underlined growing cooperation in defence, cybersecurity, maritime security and space technology, saying such partnerships would support efforts to address challenges including terrorism, cybercrime, human trafficking and organised criminal activity.

On connectivity and global trade architecture, the article highlighted the emergence of an “Indo-Mediterranean” region linking the Indian Ocean and Europe through networks related to trade, energy and digital connectivity.

Both leaders reiterated support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, describing it as an important initiative intended to strengthen transport infrastructure, improve supply chains and enhance digital links connecting Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

The article concluded by emphasising shared civilisational values and cultural traditions, with both leaders stating that the India-Italy partnership would continue to prioritise people-centric growth, innovation and long-term global cooperation.
