Shillong, June 21: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lauded the artisans of Larnai village in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district for safeguarding the state’s GI-tagged black clay pottery tradition, describing the craft as a symbol of the region’s cultural identity and a vital source of livelihood for local communities.
During her visit to the village, Sitharaman witnessed the traditional pottery-making process and also participated in the activity by shaping clay under the guidance of local artisans. She remarked that the centuries-old craft represents Meghalaya’s rich heritage while continuing to support the economic well-being of artisan families.
Emphasising the importance of preserving traditional skills, the Finance Minister said such crafts play a crucial role in sustaining rural economies and ensuring that indigenous knowledge is passed down to future generations. She praised the commitment and craftsmanship of the artisans and said their work deserves wider recognition and support so that the unique GI-tagged legacy can access broader markets and continue empowering local communities.
Later, Sitharaman visited the historic Nartiang Monoliths and was briefed about their archaeological and cultural significance. She also inaugurated the Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex, including a football stadium, stating that improved sporting infrastructure would help nurture young talent and create more opportunities for youth development.
Her itinerary also included visits to the Shri Maa Jayantee Temple and the Nartiang heritage complex. Sitharaman said the Centre remains committed to preserving Meghalaya’s cultural heritage while promoting tourism, supporting traditional livelihoods and strengthening grassroots development.
