Aizawl, June 5: More than half of the enumeration forms required for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Mizoram have already been distributed, the Election Commission of India said on Wednesday.
The revision exercise, which began on May 30, is scheduled to continue until June 28.
ECI Deputy Director (Media) Avip Kumar Singh praised the efforts of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and election personnel, stating that the state has made encouraging progress during the initial phase of the exercise.
According to Singh, several districts have already achieved more than 50 per cent distribution of enumeration forms, while some areas have crossed the 80 per cent mark within days of the launch of the programme.
He said BLOs are conducting door-to-door visits to distribute forms, verify voter details, assist electors with documentation and ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral rolls. To maximise coverage, officials have been instructed to make repeat visits and coordinate with family members or neighbours when electors are unavailable during initial visits.
Singh also urged media organisations to actively report on the revision process and help raise public awareness about the exercise. He described the media as an important stakeholder in disseminating accurate information and providing feedback on the implementation process.
To facilitate regular reporting, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and District Election Officers (DEOs) has been directed to provide timely updates, press releases and factual information regarding the revision exercise.
Officials said the SIR process involves multiple stages, beginning with household visits by BLOs for the distribution and collection of enumeration forms. Electors may also submit their forms online through the Election Commission’s digital platform.
The exercise will subsequently be followed by the publication of a draft electoral roll, a claims and objections period, hearings on disputed entries, publication of the final electoral roll and disposal of appeals by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) and the Chief Electoral Officer.
The Election Commission stated that the revision aims to ensure the inclusion of all eligible voters while preventing the addition of ineligible entries.
Emphasising the importance of accurate electoral rolls, Singh said the nationwide revision seeks to strengthen the integrity of the electoral process by removing inaccuracies arising from deceased voters, duplicate registrations, shifted electors and other ineligible entries.
He clarified that the exercise is solely intended to maintain accurate electoral rolls based on eligibility criteria and is not designed to identify or target any individual or group.
