Delhi: Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant has stepped down from his leadership role following the franchise’s disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, which saw the team finish at the bottom of the points table for the first time in its history. The franchise confirmed on Friday that Pant had requested to be relieved of captaincy duties, and the management accepted his decision. According to reports, the move comes as LSG prepares for a major rebuilding phase ahead of the next IPL season. Pant, who was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for a record Rs 27 crore ahead of IPL 2025, arrived with huge expectations as both a marquee player and captain. However, his tenure failed to produce the desired results, with the team missing the playoffs in consecutive seasons and struggling for consistency throughout IPL 2026.

Reports suggest that LSG management and Director of Cricket Tom Moody have already begun discussions regarding restructuring the squad and appointing a new leader for IPL 2027. Pant’s own form also came under scrutiny during the season. The wicketkeeper-batter managed only a few impactful performances and faced criticism over tactical decisions and frequent batting-order changes. Despite stepping down as captain, Pant is expected to remain a crucial part of the franchise as a senior player. Cricket experts believe relieving him of leadership responsibilities could help him focus more on his batting and regain his best form ahead of India’s upcoming international assignments. With Pant’s resignation, Lucknow Super Giants are now expected to begin the search for a new captain as they aim to bounce back strongly in IPL 2027.
