Dibrugarh : Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Dibrugarh MP Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday visited the newly constructed stadium at Khanikar and reviewed the infrastructure developed to promote sports in the region. During the inspection, Sonowal assessed various facilities at the stadium and examined the progress of infrastructure works aimed at strengthening sports activities in Dibrugarh and adjoining areas. He also offered suggestions for the effective development, maintenance and utilisation of the sports complex.

Expressing optimism about the project’s future impact, Sonowal said the modern stadium, equipped with contemporary facilities, would play a significant role in advancing sports in Dibrugarh district as well as across Upper Assam. He noted that the facility would provide a platform for young athletes to nurture their talent and pursue excellence in various sporting disciplines. “The stadium will mark a new chapter in the development of sports in the region and help create greater opportunities for our youth,” Sonowal said, adding that robust sports infrastructure is essential for encouraging participation and identifying future champions. The Union Minister emphasized the importance of investing in sports facilities to build a healthy sporting culture and support aspiring athletes. He expressed confidence that the stadium would emerge as a key centre for training, competitions and sporting events in Upper Assam.
Several dignitaries accompanied Sonowal during the visit, including Assam Tourism Development Corporation Chairman Rituparna Baruah, Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited Chairman Bikul Deka, Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Ujjal Phukan, Dibrugarh Development Authority Chairman Asim Hazarika, Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Tongkeswar Sonowal, District Commissioner Bikram Kairi, Dibrugarh District Sports Association President Niranjan Saikia and District Sports Officer Sami Saikia, among others. The visit underscored the government’s focus on strengthening sports infrastructure and promoting athletic development in the state.
