Unused Cold Storage Facility in Assam’s Nagaon Raises Concerns Amid Farmers’ Storage Crisis

As farmers across Assam continue to grapple with inadequate cold storage infrastructure, the abandoned condition of a cold storage facility in the Rongagarh area of Samaguri in Nagaon district has sparked resentment among local residents.

According to residents, the facility was constructed in 2011 at a cost of several crores of rupees with the objective of enabling farmers to store and preserve agricultural produce. However, despite the substantial investment, the cold storage unit has reportedly remained non-functional since its completion.

Over the years, the prolonged neglect has led to the deterioration of the infrastructure and equipment within the complex. The premises have become overgrown with weeds and vegetation, while locals allege that parts of the facility have turned into a gathering place for anti-social elements.

The issue has assumed significance at a time when farmers in Assam are facing increasing post-harvest losses due to the lack of proper storage facilities. In the absence of adequate cold storage, large quantities of fruits, vegetables and other produce often perish because of extreme temperatures or delays in reaching markets.

Residents have questioned the apparent wastage of public funds and expressed disappointment that the facility remains unused more than a decade after it was built. They said a functional cold storage unit would provide crucial support to farmers in the area and help minimise losses caused by spoilage.

Locals have urged the state government to intervene and ensure that the facility is made operational at the earliest so that it can serve the farming community and fulfil the purpose for which it was established.
