Supreme Court Agrees to Consider Plea Against Assam CM Over Viral Video

Guwahati, Feb 10: The Supreme Court on February 10 agreed to consider listing a plea filed by leaders of the CPI and CPI(M) seeking action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over a viral video allegedly showing him aiming a rifle and firing at members of a particular community.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and N.V. Anjaria took note of submissions made by senior advocate Nizam Pasha, appearing for the petitioners, and said it would examine the request for urgent listing. Pasha submitted that complaints had been filed over the video but no FIR had been registered.

Responding to the plea, the Chief Justice observed that election-related issues were increasingly being brought before the Supreme Court and said a date would be given after consideration.

The plea relates to a video shared on February 7 by the Assam BJP on its official X handle, which allegedly showed the chief minister aiming a rifle and firing at two individuals, one wearing a skull cap and the other sporting a beard. The post drew sharp political criticism and allegations of promoting communal hatred.

The BJP later deleted the post, but the controversy continued, leading to multiple complaints and judicial scrutiny.
