Guwahati, Feb 27: Tension prevailed in Majigaon in Assam’s Bongaigaon district after a fire erupted on a nearby hill, with residents alleging that the blaze was deliberately triggered by miscreants.
The incident caused anxiety among locals and environmental activists, who expressed concern over the potential damage to the area’s fragile ecology. Many feared that the fire could severely impact forest resources, wildlife habitats and the broader environmental balance of the region.
Local nature-loving youths strongly condemned the suspected act of arson, stating that repeated hill fires pose a serious threat to biodiversity and natural heritage. They argued that such incidents reflect inadequate preventive measures and insufficient monitoring in vulnerable zones.
The youths also levelled allegations against the Forest Department, claiming that proper surveillance and security arrangements in hill tracts and reserved forest areas have not been effectively implemented. Calling for urgent intervention, they urged the authorities to intensify patrolling and enforce stricter safeguards to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
