Guwahati Imposes Restrictions Near DC Office Ahead of Nomination Deadline

Guwahati, March 23: In a pre-emptive step to ensure smooth conduct of election procedures, the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration on Sunday, March 22 imposed prohibitory restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023 across key areas of Guwahati ahead of the final day for filing nominations.

The order was issued by District Magistrate Swapneel Paul amid expectations of heavy footfall and vehicular movement around the District Commissioner’s office on Hengrabari Road. Officials said the move aims to prevent congestion and maintain public order during a critical phase of the electoral process.

As per the directive, rallies and processions have been restricted from moving beyond the Ganeshguri–Hengrabari Road junction near the Ganeshguri flyover. The administration flagged the narrow approach road to the DC office as a potential bottleneck, cautioning that unrestricted movement could lead to severe traffic disruptions.

Public gatherings have also been prohibited in and around the DC office premises on Hengrabari Road to avoid overcrowding and ensure that nomination-related activities proceed without hindrance.

Authorities further stated that entry into the DC office premises will be strictly limited to authorised individuals directly involved in the nomination process, in line with guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India.

The administration described the measures as preventive, urging political parties, candidates, and the public to comply with the restrictions to ensure safe and orderly conduct of election-related activities.
