Guwahati, April 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 6 launched a sharp escalation in his attack on the Indian National Congress, alleging foreign interference, fabrication of evidence, and warning of legal consequences that could extend to imprisonment for senior leaders.
Referring to allegations raised by Congress leaders, Sarma claimed the episode had politically backfired on the party. Citing informal “satta bazar” trends, he said the NDA’s projected tally increased from 94 seats in the morning to 99 by night. “Congress is finished in Assam,” he remarked, asserting that public support for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance was growing.
Sarma reiterated that Pawan Khera could face legal action, noting that a police complaint has already been filed. He said authorities would decide on further steps, describing the issue as “a crime against the country.” While referring to Rahul Gandhi’s use of the term “alleged,” he maintained that primary responsibility lay with Khera.
The Chief Minister also claimed prior knowledge of the developments, stating that he had alerted a journalist on March 27 about an impending controversy. He added that the matter has been brought to the attention of the Government of India.
Escalating his allegations, Sarma questioned why Congress leaders allegedly relied on Pakistani social media sources and accused Gaurav Gogoi of being linked to such networks. He framed the issue as one of national security, alleging attempts to influence the electoral process in Assam.
Drawing a historical parallel, Sarma claimed that similar tactics had been used in the past, suggesting a pattern of political attacks based on questionable material.
He concluded by stating that the government would pursue the matter through legal channels, including courts if necessary, and that those responsible for fabricating and circulating the allegations would face strict action under the law.
