Suspected Thief Dies of Electrocution at Dhubri Construction Site Amid Rising Crime Concerns

Dhubri, May 15: A man suspected of involvement in theft died after allegedly being electrocuted at a residential construction site in Assam’s Dhubri town early on Friday, May 15, raising fresh concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the district.

The incident occurred at Ward No. 8 on Zakir Hussain Road at the residence of former Dhubri Zila Sahitya Sabha president Lutfar Rahman. The identity of the deceased had not been established at the time of reporting.

According to Rahman, the incident unfolded in the early hours of the morning after he had opened the main gate of his residence following dawn prayers.

“At 5:00 AM, after finishing my prayers, I opened the main gate to allow easy entry for our domestic helps when they arrived later, and then I went back to sleep,” Rahman said.

He stated that around 7 AM, he heard a loud sound coming from the under-construction section of the property. On reaching the spot, he found a man lying on the ground while still holding an electrical wire.

Police personnel arrived shortly after receiving information about the incident and began an investigation. Preliminary findings suggest the man may have suffered electrocution while attempting to move through the construction area, although officials said the exact circumstances leading to the death are yet to be confirmed.

The incident comes against the backdrop of growing public concern over an increase in theft and burglary cases across Dhubri in recent weeks. Residents from different parts of the town have alleged that repeated break-ins at homes and commercial establishments have created fear among the public.

Locals from several of the town’s 16 wards have also questioned the effectiveness of policing and recently approached the district Superintendent of Police seeking intensified night patrolling and stronger preventive measures by the Sadar Police Station.

While the probe into the electrocution case remains ongoing, the incident has once again highlighted mounting concerns over public safety and crime in Dhubri town.
