Former MLA Ali Akbar Mian Arrested in Dhubri Over Alleged Threatening Social Media Remarks

Dhubri, May 23: Former MLA Ali Akbar Mian was arrested by Assam Police in Dhubri following allegations that he made provocative and threatening remarks on social media directed at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state law enforcement authorities ahead of the upcoming Eid al-Adha festival.

According to sources, a large police deployment surrounded Mian’s residence late on Friday night amid concerns over a possible law-and-order situation in the sensitive border district. After securing the area, police personnel entered the premises and detained the former legislator.

Authorities later shifted Mian to Dhubri Sadar Police Station under heightened security arrangements to prevent any possible mobilisation by supporters. Senior officials reportedly questioned him through the night.

The action followed a public statement allegedly made by Mian regarding cattle sacrifice during Bakri Eid. According to allegations, he made derogatory remarks against the Chief Minister and issued threats targeting police personnel.

Police said a criminal case, numbered 163/2026, has been registered against him at Bilasipara Police Station under multiple sections related to hate speech, criminal intimidation and incitement of violence against public servants.

The arrest has attracted political attention in Dhubri as Mian’s wife, Farida Yasmin, currently serves as President of the Dhubri Zilla Parishad.

Officials have not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the investigation. However, sources indicated that Mian is expected to be produced before a local court, where police may seek custody for further questioning.
