The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) has recorded another strong performance, with several estates securing record prices for premium-quality tea at recent auctions, further strengthening its position as a key marketplace for high-grade tea.
According to GTAC Secretary Dinesh Bihani, a premium line of CTC leaf from Deckiajuli Tea Estate was sold at ₹1,103 per kg, while another line from the same estate fetched ₹973 per kg, reflecting sustained demand and buyer confidence in quality teas.
Deckiajuli Tea Estate, owned by Parry Agro Industries Ltd., has maintained a consistent focus on premium production. Company representative Joe Louis, Associate Vice President (Marketing), said the estate’s long-term emphasis on quality is now being reflected in strong auction realisations.
In another notable development, tea from Sotai Tea Estate achieved ₹889 per kg, marking the highest price ever recorded for the garden.
Bihani further noted that during Sale No. 23, more than 65,000 kilograms of tea were sold at prices above ₹400 per kg, indicating a steady rise in appreciation for quality-driven lots among buyers and traders. He also highlighted that the sector has received policy support from the Assam government, including a ₹15 per kg subsidy for orthodox tea manufacturers aimed at strengthening the segment.
GTAC, currently the world’s second-largest auction centre for CTC tea, is also working to expand its presence in the orthodox tea segment. Industry stakeholders believe this shift could attract more export buyers and enhance direct export opportunities through the auction platform.
With record price realisations and growing market interest, GTAC continues to consolidate its role as a major hub in the global tea trade, benefiting producers and strengthening Assam’s tea economy.
