Tension gripped the Abhayapuri area of Assam’s Bongaigaon district after an eight-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to a brutal assault, triggering widespread public outrage and protests. The child is currently undergoing treatment in hospital, where her condition is reported to be critical.
According to local authorities, the incident took place recently when the minor was allegedly attacked and severely injured. Police have identified the main accused as Moniruddin, a resident of the area, who reportedly fled soon after the incident and remains absconding.
The victim was immediately taken to a nearby medical facility following the assault. Doctors attending to her said she is in critical condition and continues to receive intensive medical care.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from across the region, with several local organisations, civil society groups and community leaders taking to the streets to demand justice. Protesters have called for immediate action against the accused and sought the strictest punishment under the law.
Police have registered a case and invoked relevant legal provisions, including sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Officials said multiple teams have been deployed to trace and apprehend the suspect.
