Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday called on the Centre to immediately utilise the PM CARES Fund for relief and rehabilitation in the flood and landslide-affected northeastern states, while accusing BJP-led governments of failing to fulfil their commitment to make the region free from recurring floods.
In a post on X, Kharge expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the disasters that have impacted Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim. He also conveyed solidarity with those displaced and affected by the floods and landslides.
The Congress chief alleged that the BJP’s promise to make the northeastern states flood-free had not been realised, claiming that floods continue to occur every year because of inadequate preparedness and the absence of long-term mitigation measures.
He urged the Union government not to treat the situation as a routine disaster response and called for the immediate use of the PM CARES Fund to ensure adequate compensation, comprehensive rehabilitation and sustained relief for affected families.
Kharge also appealed to the Centre to deploy additional personnel, financial resources and relief materials to strengthen ongoing rescue operations, restore damaged infrastructure and ensure that all affected families receive necessary assistance.
While appreciating the efforts of the Armed Forces, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel engaged in rescue and relief operations, he said the scale of the humanitarian crisis demands a stronger and more comprehensive response.
The Congress president further directed party leaders and workers to extend assistance to people in flood-affected areas and support victims across the northeastern region.
