Tourist Entry Suspended at Meghalaya’s Weisawdong Falls as Fresh Village Dispute Triggers Prohibitory Orders

Fresh tension over the control and management of tourism activities at Weisawdong Falls has led the Sohra Civil Sub-Division administration to impose prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in an effort to prevent any breach of peace.

The order, issued by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Mark A. Challam, came into effect immediately after the administration received reports that the long-standing dispute between Laitduh and Umblai villages had resurfaced. Authorities expressed concern over the possibility of confrontation after residents of Umblai Village reportedly planned to reopen or construct an approach route to the waterfall from Arliang Riat.

According to the administration, a demarcation order issued by the Syiem of Hima Sohra in August 2025 had placed the custody of Weisawdong Falls under Laitduh Village. However, the decision was subsequently challenged, and a joint meeting held in September 2025 resolved that the arrangement would remain temporary until the dispute is finally settled.

To maintain law and order, the administration has prohibited the assembly of five or more persons within a 200-metre radius of Weisawdong Falls, including all existing and proposed access routes. The order also bans the carrying of sticks, machetes, firearms or any other weapons within the restricted area.

As part of the precautionary measures, tourist entry to Weisawdong Falls has been suspended until further orders. The administration warned that anyone found violating the restrictions would be liable for prosecution under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Citing the urgency of the prevailing situation, the authorities said the prohibitory order was enforced with immediate effect to prevent any escalation of the dispute and to preserve public peace.
