New Arunachal Plant Species Named After Deputy CM Chowna Mein

A newly discovered flowering plant from the biodiverse forests of Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Dibang Valley has been named Ophiorrhiza chownai sp. nov. in honour of Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, recognising his contributions to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Sharing the announcement on X, Mein described the discovery as a reflection of Arunachal Pradesh’s extraordinary natural heritage and the immense scientific importance of its rich ecosystems. He said every new scientific finding strengthens the need to protect forests and encourage research that enhances understanding of nature.

Expressing gratitude to the researchers, Mein said he was deeply honoured that the new species had been named after him. He also congratulated the research team and wished them success in documenting the state’s biodiversity.

According to information shared by the Deputy Chief Minister, Ophiorrhiza chownai is endemic to Arunachal Pradesh and has been recorded from the wet evergreen hill forests of Lower Dibang Valley. The species belongs to the Rubiaceae, or coffee, family and has so far been found only at a single natural site at an elevation of around 618 metres.

Researchers have classified the plant as Critically Endangered, estimating that fewer than 200 individuals remain in the wild. The classification highlights the need for urgent habitat protection and continued scientific research.

The discovery adds another unique species to Arunachal Pradesh’s rich biodiversity and further reinforces the state’s importance as one of India’s leading biodiversity hotspots.
