Classes in flood-affected schools across Sivasagar, Nazira and Charaideo will resume after August 15, subject to the receding of floodwaters and completion of restoration work, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said.
Pegu said more than 150 schools in the affected districts remain submerged or have suffered severe disruption due to floodwaters, mud and silt.
Several school campuses are still under water, while others have been left covered with mud and silt as floodwaters recede. The conditions have made it difficult for schools to immediately resume regular academic activities.
The Education Department is assessing the condition of the affected institutions and will undertake necessary restoration work before allowing classes to restart, the minister said.
According to Pegu, reopening will take place after August 15, depending on the condition of individual school premises and the progress of restoration efforts.
The disruption comes as parts of Upper Assam continue to deal with the effects of flooding, with waterlogging and damage to school infrastructure affecting normal academic activities.
Flood-affected communities in Sivasagar, Nazira and Charaideo are also continuing to cope with the impact of the deluge, with several areas yet to return to normal conditions.
