Guwahati: Gauhati University witnessed protests on Thursday night and Friday after the candidature of Nahan Akash Bora, who was contesting for the post of president in the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) election, was cancelled. According to reports, Bora’s nomination had cleared the initial scrutiny and was considered valid. However, his name was subsequently removed from the final list of candidates, prompting a section of students to protest against the decision. The protesting students have sought a clear explanation from the university authorities over the circumstances surrounding the cancellation. They questioned why the candidature was removed after the nomination had reportedly been declared valid during scrutiny.

As part of the agitation, students gathered near the university’s main entrance and staged a protest. Tyres were also reportedly burnt at the main gate as the demonstration intensified. The students have demanded transparency in the election process and a satisfactory explanation from the university administration regarding the decision. The controversy comes ahead of the PGSU election scheduled for September 30. According to the announced election schedule, campaigning is permitted until September 28, while an open debate among candidates is scheduled for September 28 at the BKB Auditorium. Polling will be held from 9 am to 3 pm on September 30, with counting scheduled for October 1.
The university has designated four polling locations for the election, while vote counting will take place at the New Academic Building. The protest has added to the election-related activity on the Gauhati University campus, with students awaiting clarification from the authorities on the candidature issue and the way forward. Further developments are expected after the university administration responds to the students’ demands.
