Garima Saikia Garg urges public to keep Zubeen justice campaign free of political ideology

GUWAHATI, Oct 17: Garima Saikia Garg, wife of singer Zubeen Garg, has reiterated that securing justice in his death must remain the sole focus of the campaign, warning against attempts to attach it to any political party or ideology.

In a social media post, Garima said she was travelling to Gaya to perform rituals for Zubeen, her mother-in-law Ily Borthakur and her sister-in-law Jonkie Borthakur. She said the family would not be able to attend Saturday’s public meeting at Zubeen Khetra in Sonapur but would fully support the people of Assam in their pursuit of justice.

“We fully support every fight for justice for Zubeen. There is no political or any other ideology in it, and let no one try to impose their own views on it,” she wrote.

Her statement came ahead of a meeting convened by Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi and visual artist Marshall Baruah at noon on Saturday to discuss the next steps in the campaign following bail for two accused in the case.

Baruah had urged people to attend the meeting, questioning whether the remaining accused would also obtain bail. Gogoi separately invited the public to join the discussion on the demand for justice.

The developments follow the Gauhati High Court’s decision to grant bail to singer Amritprabha Mahanta. Zubeen’s cousin, Sandipan Garg, has also secured bail. Both had filed bail petitions in January.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) named seven accused in its chargesheet. Sandipan Garg, a suspended Assam Police Deputy Superintendent of Police, was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Zubeen Garg died in Singapore in September 2025. His death prompted widespread demands across Assam for an investigation and accountability, and the case continues to draw public attention.
