Meghalaya Gets Highest NEC Allocation of Rs 26.56 Crore in October

Meghalaya received Rs 26.56 crore from the North Eastern Council (NEC) in October 2026, the highest allocation among the eight Northeastern states, with a substantial share directed towards improving rural road connectivity.

The funding formed part of the Rs 79.53 crore released by the Council under the Schemes of NEC (SoNEC) and the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS-Roads) for projects across the region.

A major component of Meghalaya’s allocation was earmarked for the rehabilitation and strengthening of the 46.08-km Chokpot-Kharukol road. The project was expected to improve access for 78 villages and benefit more than 15,000 people. The NEC also provided financial assistance for setting up a multi-disciplinary training-cum-resource centre in Shillong.

Sikkim received the second-highest allocation of Rs 15.51 crore, followed by Assam with Rs 14.79 crore. Arunachal Pradesh was allocated Rs 11.18 crore, Nagaland Rs 7.99 crore and Tripura Rs 3.50 crore. Manipur and Mizoram also received support for infrastructure and other development projects.

In its October review, the NEC reported the completion of a project at North-Eastern Hill University in Shillong to design and develop low-cost laboratory instruments.

The review also covered completed and ongoing initiatives across the Northeast in areas including strategic road infrastructure, scientific research, agricultural processing, educational facilities and cultural preservation.
