SAKP Seeks Fast-Track Implementation of OPS for Pre-2005 Recruits

The Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP) has urged the Assam government to speed up the transition from the New Pension Scheme (NPS) to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for employees whose recruitment process began before January 2005.

In a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the employees’ organisation sought immediate verification of data already collected by the Finance Department and the issuance of final orders allowing eligible employees to opt for OPS.

SAKP president Kumud Kumar Kataki and secretary general Pranabjyoti Bhuyan said the demand was based on the Centre’s Office Memorandum of February 17, 2020, and a communication issued by the Assam Finance Department on March 28, 2025. Under the provisions cited by the organisation, employees whose recruitment process started before January 2005 could opt for the old pension arrangement.

The parishad said the Finance Department had gathered details from various government departments, but the exercise had not yet led to implementation. It urged the government to resolve the matter, stating that employees who had served the state for decades should not face uncertainty over their retirement benefits.

Separately, SAKP has given individuals involved in ongoing legal disputes against the organisation three months to withdraw their cases unconditionally. The decision was taken at its Central Executive Body meeting on November 1, 2026.

Spokesperson Sailendra Pandey said the organisation remained committed to safeguarding government employees’ interests while maintaining accountability within its ranks.

Kataki and Bhuyan said the Central Executive Body had authorised the president and secretary general to take all pending legal proceedings to their conclusion if the litigants failed to withdraw their cases within the stipulated period.
