Former Union Minister Rajen Gohain Joins AJP After Quitting BJP

Guwahati: Former Union Minister and four-time Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain officially joined the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) in Guwahati on Monday, marking a major political shift after his resignation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) earlier this month.

Gohain, once a stalwart of the BJP and Minister of State for Railways in the first Modi government, joined AJP along with several supporters at the PWD auditorium in the presence of senior party leaders, including president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Chitta Basumatary, and Jagadish Bhuyan.

Addressing the gathering, Gohain said he would discharge his responsibilities with sincerity and commitment, as he has always done in his political career. Expressing discontent with the BJP’s current leadership in Assam, he noted that the party had strayed from the ideals of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani, under whom he began his political journey.

Gohain, who resigned from the BJP on October 9, had earlier voiced frustration over the party’s direction and functioning. “I have been patient for a long time, but it’s highly dissatisfying. Only a regional party can truly serve Assam’s interests,” he had said after his resignation.
