Manipur Police Probe Alleged Assault on Senior Officer During Protest March

Manipur Police have launched a criminal investigation after a woman protestor allegedly assaulted Inspector General of Police (Zone-I) Themthing Ngashangva and used racial slurs against him during an unauthorised march linked to opposition against the Sangai Festival 2025.

According to officials, the confrontation unfolded on November 20 when a group of 50–60 COCOMI volunteers attempted to march from Govindajee Crossing toward Hapta Kangjeibung despite prohibitory orders issued by the Imphal East District Magistrate. Police personnel, including women officers, made repeated attempts to stop the group, but tensions escalated when protestors reportedly threw placards and water bottles at the security line.

Police said the IGP, who was overseeing the ground operation, was physically assaulted by a woman demonstrator who also directed derogatory racial remarks at him. The situation intensified further when the protestors advanced toward the Palace complex, where house guards of a Member of Parliament allegedly permitted them to enter, complicating crowd-control measures. The IGP confronted the guards regarding their actions but did not enter the premises.

A criminal case has been registered at Porompat Police Station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, covering charges that include assault on a public servant, obstruction of duty, breach of security barricades, use of racial slurs, and unauthorised movement toward a restricted location. Investigators are reviewing video footage and gathering statements to identify the woman involved in the alleged assault.

Manipur Police stated that officers exercised restraint throughout the incident and used only minimal force necessary to restore order.
