Singapore Police Rule Out Foul Play in Singer Zubeen Garg’s Death, Coroner’s Inquiry Slated for 2026

Singapore authorities have stated that they do not suspect any foul play in the death of renowned Indian singer Zubeen Garg, even as investigations continue under the country’s Coroners Act. Garg passed away on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore, just a day before he was due to perform at the 4th Northeast India Festival at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre.

In an official statement issued on December 18, the Singapore Police Force said the case remains under investigation in accordance with the Coroners Act 2010. Based on findings so far, the police clarified that there is no indication of criminal involvement in Garg’s death. Authorities added that once the investigation is completed, the results will be formally submitted to the State Coroner.

A Coroner’s Inquiry, described as a fact-finding process to determine the exact cause and circumstances of death, has been scheduled for January and February 2026. The conclusions of the inquiry will be made public after it concludes. The police also appealed for patience, urging the public to refrain from speculation or circulating unverified information while the legal process is underway.

The statement from Singapore comes amid parallel developments in India, where a Special Investigation Team has filed charges of murder against four individuals in connection with Garg’s death. Those named include the singer’s secretary, Siddhartha Sharma, and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, a move that has intensified public debate and scrutiny.

Zubeen Garg, a prominent figure in Indian music, had travelled to Singapore specifically for the festival performance scheduled on September 20. While investigations in Singapore are proceeding through the coroner’s mechanism, authorities there have reiterated their commitment to a thorough and professional inquiry, noting that final conclusions will be reached only after the completion of the scheduled hearings.
