One Killed in Police Firing After Machete Attack in Assam’s Dimow

Guwahati, Jan 7: One person was killed in police firing in Dimow area of Assam after he allegedly attacked his neighbours with a machete while under the influence of alcohol, leaving two others critically injured, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Pandav, a resident of Kharahat Bordirai village. According to police sources, the incident occurred late on Monday night when Pandav allegedly assaulted his neighbours, Martin Pandav and his wife Geeta Pandav, with a sharp weapon, inflicting grievous injuries on both.

On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and attempted to bring the situation under control. However, the accused allegedly continued to behave violently and became uncontrollable, prompting the police to open fire at his leg in an attempt to restrain him.

Pandav sustained bullet injuries and was immediately taken to Dibrugarh for medical treatment. He, however, succumbed to his injuries while being transported.

Meanwhile, the injured couple has been admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, where their condition is stated to be critical.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the firing.
