Guwahati, Jan 7: Assam is set to witness a historic sporting moment with the arrival of the iconic FIFA World Cup Trophy in the state for the first time. The visit of one of the most coveted symbols in global sports is expected to place Assam firmly on the international football map and spark renewed enthusiasm among football fans and young athletes.
The announcement was made by Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa during a press conference held on Tuesday at the Bhogeshwari Phukanani Indoor Stadium in Dispur. She confirmed that the FIFA World Cup Trophy will arrive in Guwahati on January 13, marking its maiden visit to Assam.
According to the minister, the trophy is scheduled to reach Guwahati at 10 am and will be put on public display at Barsapara Stadium from 3 pm onwards, allowing football enthusiasts a rare opportunity to see the prestigious trophy up close.
The official inauguration ceremony will be held at 8:30 pm and will be formally inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Notably, the Assam leg of the trophy tour coincides with the FIFA World Cup Trophy’s return to India after a gap of 12 years, adding greater significance to the event. Entry to the programme will be free of cost to ensure wide public participation.
Adding to the celebratory spirit, a cultural programme will be organised on the Coke Studio stage from 3 pm, featuring performances by popular artistes including Shankuraj and Ritu Ribak, the minister said.
