A violent confrontation between two groups in Assam’s Kokrajhar district left one person dead and four others critically injured on Monday evening, January 19, triggering tension and panic in the Gaurinagar area of Karigaon, police said.
The incident occurred around 7.30 pm and escalated rapidly after an initial altercation. The deceased has been identified as Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit, a resident of Bagaribari under Rupsi. Preliminary information suggests that the dispute quickly turned violent, resulting in fatal injuries to Bismit.
According to eyewitness accounts, the situation deteriorated within minutes, with miscreants allegedly setting a Scorpio vehicle on fire during the clash. The burning vehicle intensified fear in the locality and drew large crowds to the scene, further complicating efforts to restore calm.
Four individuals sustained serious injuries in the violence. They have been identified as Mahesh Murmu and Sunil Murmu, both residents of Karigaon, and Jugiraj Brahma of Anthaigaon. All four were rushed to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital, where they remain under close medical observation, hospital sources said.
Initial reports indicate that the clash may have been sparked by a road accident involving the Scorpio vehicle, which allegedly hit two persons. Following the incident, tempers flared and the situation spiralled out of control. However, police officials said the exact sequence of events and the underlying cause are still being investigated.
Police teams reached the area soon after receiving information and managed to bring the situation under control. Security has been tightened in Gaurinagar and surrounding areas to prevent further unrest. Senior officials confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway to identify those responsible and determine the precise circumstances that led to the violence.
As of late Monday night, the situation remained tense but stable, with a heavy police presence maintained to ensure law and order.
