Bomb threat emails to two Guwahati schools turn out to be hoax

Guwahati: Police have launched an investigation to trace the origin of bomb threat emails sent to two schools in Guwahati, which were later found to be hoaxes, a senior police officer said on Saturday. The threat emails were received by Delhi Public School, Ahomgaon, and Sanskriti – The Gurukul amid Saraswati Puja celebrations. Following the alerts, bomb disposal squads and security personnel were immediately rushed to the school campuses as a precautionary measure. However, thorough searches of the premises did not reveal any explosive materials, police confirmed.

“We are investigating the source of the emails and examining all possible angles,” the officer said, adding that cyber experts have been engaged to trace the origin of the messages. Police are also checking whether similar threat emails were sent to other educational institutions in the city. “As Saraswati Puja was observed on Friday and many schools remain closed over the weekend, it is possible that official email accounts may not have been checked. We are closely monitoring if any other institution received such messages,” the officer added.
