Musical Voyage Honours Dr Bhupen Hazarika

Guwahati:  A unique river cruise celebrating the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika has turned into a vibrant showcase of the Brahmaputra’s untapped potential as a tourism hub. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, attending the programme at Pandu Port on September 15, described the initiative as a “path to economic transformation for Assam.”

The centenary vessel “Bistirna Parore”, named after Hazarika’s iconic song, docked at Pandu Port to a rousing welcome, with thousands braving inclement weather to join the celebration. Performances by Karbi, Bodo, and Tiwa communities added a rich cultural flavour, while family members of the music legend — including son Tej Hazarika and brother Samar Hazarika — were present to pay tribute.

The voyage, which began on September 8 from Guijan in Tinsukia, is tracing the Brahmaputra’s course from Sadiya to Dhubri. Along the way, stops at Bogibeel, Neematighat, Biswanath and Tezpur have transformed into cultural gatherings. Children have participated in art sessions and citizens have joined spontaneous performances with the travelling band, blending music, culture, and community spirit.
