Assam CM Reviews Progress of 11 Under-Construction Medical Colleges, Stresses Timely Completion

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 20 reviewed the progress of 11 medical colleges and hospitals currently under construction in the state, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding medical education facilities.

During a meeting held at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati, the Chief Minister examined the status of the ongoing projects and also assessed administrative readiness for four additional medical colleges and hospitals that are yet to enter the construction stage. He instructed the departments concerned to ensure that all projects are completed within the prescribed timelines.

Emphasising the need to provide advanced, affordable and accessible healthcare services, Sarma said the state government remains focused on developing a robust healthcare ecosystem. He directed the Director of Medical Education to undertake regular inspections and maintain close monitoring of construction activities to expedite implementation.

The meeting also reviewed the functioning and development of BSc Nursing and General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) institutes. Officials discussed the role and responsibilities of Project Management Consultants involved in forthcoming healthcare infrastructure projects.

Highlighting environmental sustainability, the Chief Minister called for plantation drives within medical college campuses in collaboration with the Forest Department, stating that the initiative would enhance campus environments while contributing to conservation efforts.

MLA Taranga Gogoi, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister K K Dwivedi, along with senior officials from the Medical Education and Research Department and the Public Works Department, attended the review meeting.
