Jorhat, June 2: In a significant breakthrough against drug trafficking, Assam Police seized heroin worth nearly Rs 1 crore from TRP Road in Jorhat on June 1 and arrested two youths allegedly involved in the illegal narcotics trade.
According to police officials, the accused were intercepted while travelling on a motorcycle during a special operation carried out based on intelligence inputs. A subsequent search led to the recovery of a substantial quantity of heroin, estimated to be worth around Rs 1 crore in the illegal market.
Preliminary findings suggest that the two arrested individuals were transporting the contraband from Merapani to Jorhat when they were apprehended by the police team.
A case has been registered in connection with the seizure, and further investigation is underway to trace the origin of the narcotics as well as identify other individuals linked to the trafficking network.
Authorities said the operation marks a notable success in the ongoing crackdown against drug smuggling and illegal narcotics activities in Assam, where enforcement agencies have intensified action against trafficking routes in recent months.
